From ancient oak cathedrals to misty Celtic rainforests, Britain's woodlands offer wildly different escapes. Rank them in the order you'd most like to wander.

The New Forest
A medieval royal hunting ground where ponies still roam free across heath and broadleaf woodland. It feels like stepping into a working landscape that hasn't changed in centuries.

Wistman's Wood
A tiny, otherworldly grove of stunted oaks draped in moss and lichen on the high moor. It's the closest thing England has to a fairytale forest.

Caledonian Forest at Glen Affric
Ancient Scots pines, lochs and the chance of glimpsing red squirrels or pine martens. One of the most genuinely wild places left in Britain.

Wyre Forest
One of England's largest ancient woodlands, brilliant for bluebells, dippers along the Dowles Brook and a real sense of solitude. A serious walker's woodland.

Wistman's neighbour: Puzzlewood
Tangled paths, weathered rocks and gnarled yews said to have inspired Tolkien. Atmospheric enough to make even a short walk feel like an adventure.
