Britain has always had strong opinions about what counts as 'proper' music β but some genres get unfairly dismissed, mocked, or buried beneath the mainstream. It's time to settle the score.
Put the items in your preferred order.

UK Garage
Garage gave birth to grime, dubstep, and half of what the UK charts pretend is original today. Without it, there's no Stormzy, no Drake obsession, and probably no BBC Radio 1Xtra.

Jazz
The UK jazz scene β from Shabaka Hutchings to Ezra Collective β is arguably the most exciting it's been in decades. Yet most people still treat it like elevator music with a trumpet.

Heavy Metal
Britain literally invented heavy metal β Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest β yet it remains the genre middle England most loves to sneer at. Absolute madness.

Country
Country music has a genuinely passionate and growing fanbase across Britain, but it gets eye-rolls the moment anyone admits they like it. The snobbery is real and frankly baffling.

Drum and Bass
DnB has been a pillar of British nightlife since the 90s and still fills Fabric on a Friday night. Yet broadsheet music critics treat it like it doesn't exist. Rude.

Bhangra
Bhangra has been woven into British Asian culture for generations and influenced pop more than people acknowledge. It deserves mainstream recognition, not just a segment on a multicultural special.

Classical
Classical music gets funded, praised, and performed across the UK β yet younger audiences are made to feel it's not for them. That cultural gate-keeping is doing the genre serious damage.

Ska
Two-Tone ska was a genuinely radical, multicultural movement born in Coventry that shook the charts and challenged racism head-on. Now it's mostly remembered as that song at weddings.
