Which old-fashioned bit of housework are you most glad you never have to do again?
Before washers had a spin cycle and hoovers did the hard bit, keeping house was a proper slog. Put these old chores in order, from the one you'd hate most to the one you could just about live with.
Put the items in your preferred order.
A
Wash day with the twin tub
Boiling water, heaving soaking sheets from one drum to the other, then feeding them through the mangle. Your arms ached until Wednesday.

A bucket of terry nappies
No nappy bin, no bags, just a bucket of bleach and a lot of rinsing. And it was waiting for you again the next morning.

Scrubbing the front step
Donkey stone in hand, scrubbing the doorstep so the neighbours had nothing to say. Nobody dared skip a week.

Black-leading the kitchen range
Rubbing polish into cast iron until it shone, then getting the coal dust straight back on it. A job that undid itself.

Ironing every last thing
Pillowcases, tea towels, shirt collars stiff with starch, all pressed with a heavy flat iron. The basket never actually emptied.
