Vicks on the chest
A big dollop rubbed on your chest at bedtime, then tucked in tight. Half of us still do it to this day.

Hot honey and lemon
Boiling water, a spoon of honey, a squeeze of lemon. Some nans added a drop of whisky and called it medicine.

A hot water bottle
Wrapped in a knitted cover and pressed to your tummy or your back. Cheaper than any pill and twice as comforting.

Steam under a tea towel
A bowl of hot water, a towel over your head and a right good sniff. Your face goes bright red but your nose clears.

Germolene on every scrape
Grazed knee, bee sting, mystery lump β out came the tube. The smell alone made you feel better.
