Which sci-fi film universe would you most want to actually live in?
Science fiction has given us some of the most breathtaking and terrifying visions of the future — from gleaming utopias to war-torn galaxies. But if you had to pack your bags and move in permanently, which universe would you choose?

Star Wars
Faster-than-light travel, alien cultures on every corner, and the occasional mystical Force power — it sounds extraordinary. Just try to stay away from any planet-destroying superweapons and you should be fine.

Star Trek (The Next Generation era)
A post-scarcity society where disease is largely conquered, replicators provide anything you fancy, and humanity has genuinely sorted itself out. The Prime Directive might be frustrating, but the quality of life aboard the Enterprise is hard to argue with.

The Matrix (freed from the simulation)
Once you're unplugged and living in Zion, reality is grim but genuine — and you can learn kung fu in seconds. There's something compelling about fighting for authentic human existence, even if the hovercraft is draughty.

Interstellar universe
Humanity has pushed beyond a dying Earth to explore the farthest reaches of space, armed with extraordinary science and sheer determination. The time dilation is a bit of a social nightmare, mind you.

Dune universe
Arrakis is a brutal desert world, but the broader Dune universe is an extraordinary tapestry of feudal politics, religious prophecy, and ecological wonder. If you can tolerate the heat and avoid the sandworms, the coffee alternative — spice melange — apparently opens your mind beautifully.

The Expanse universe
Set a few centuries from now, The Expanse depicts a solar system colonised by humans — complete with all the class struggle, resource wars, and political intrigue you'd expect. It's bleak in places, but it feels like the most plausible future on this list.

Guardians of the Galaxy universe
The Marvel cosmic universe is loud, colourful, and packed with wildly different alien species running market stalls across the galaxy. If you can handle the constant threat of intergalactic villains, the nightlife across various space stations looks genuinely incredible.

Arrival universe
The world of Arrival is essentially our own, but one where humanity is grappling seriously with first contact and the nature of time itself. Learning the Heptapod language might rewire your brain — but what a rewiring.
