Was the 1834 burning of Parliament a national tragedy β or a fitting metaphor for British governance?
On 16 October 1834, the medieval Palace of Westminster went up in flames after clerks burned too many tally sticks in a stove. The disaster gave us the Gothic Parliament we know today, but the symbolism has never quite faded.
